Do Cast Iron Muffin Pans Come Pre-Seasoned?

Some cast iron muffin pans do come pre-seasoned, such as the examples above. However, if you bought yours from an antique store, garage sale, etc., or it’s been in the family a long time, you probably should season it again, even if it were previously seasoned.

How to Season Cast Iron Muffin Pans

To season your cast iron muffin pan, you’ll want to heat your oven to 300° F while washing your cast iron muffin pan in some hot, soapy water (use mild soap). Then you just need to rinse it and be sure to dry it thoroughly before applying a liberal coat of solid vegetable oil to the entire cast iron muffin pan.

Make sure you can get every nook and cranny while applying the seasoning oil. Then when you’re finished, you’ll want to place the seasoned cast iron muffin pan, open side up, and heat it at 300° F for approximately one hour. After allowing it to cool off, you should then pour off any of the remaining oil and clean it with a paper towel.

Once you begin baking in your new cast iron muffin pan, you’ll want to re-season it a few times. Just simply do this for 20 minutes at 375 F and then allow the excess oil to drip out of the pan. Again, do not wash the pan immediately after seasoning.

However, if re-seasoning a rusty or old cast iron muffin pan, you’ll need to start by heating your oven to 275° F, and clean it really good, including scrubbing off any dried or baked-on food.

Next, you’ll bake the cast iron muffin pan in your oven for about 15 minutes before taking it out and removing any of the excess oil. Lastly, put the muffin pan back in your oven for two hours.
